Wimbledon 2013

  Wimbledon 2013

Yippee, its here again  - Wimbledon.

Starting Monday 24 June, two weeks of tennis at the world famous All England Club. Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world (and widely still considered the most prestigious). It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London since 1877. The tournament is one of the 4 Grand Slams  (also called majors) on the tennis circuit - the others being the Australian Open, French Open, and the US Open.

Fittingly as the oldest tournament, Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam played on the original surface - grass (hence original name Lawn Tennis). Wimbledon, also steadfastly refuses to change its ruling for the wearing of  predominately white sporting attire (although every year one or two players try to push the boundries - and yes, of course that has included the mighty Williams sisters). (More of them later).

The reigning Champion Roger Federer will open play on Centre Court Monday 24 June. This year he is seeded 3, one ranking below last years runner up, GBs own Andy Murray. I for one will be cheering Andy on - he has had a tremendous 12 months. Can he achieve his dream and be the first Brit to win since Fred Perry in 1936 (no pressure then Andy!).  This years seedings

While I will have everything crossed for him, lets not forget how much he has achieved - certain elements of the media have given both him and Tim Henman a hard time in the past. Both, with or without the Wimbledon crown have achieved great heights in their game. Tim had a world ranking of 4 in 2002, and Murray is currently number 2. Um, I think that is pretty good going.

Now on to the ladies. Reigning Champion Serena will open play on Centre Court on Tuesday 25. Will she make this her 6 Wimbledon Title? - I hope so. I love both the Williams sisters - both what they have achieved professionally and their style on the court. (purple shorts and headband 2012 - like the naughty school girl pushing the uniform boundries - go girl I say!).

Sadly this year, Serena's partner in crime and sister will not be at Wimbledon this year due to injury.

Between the 2 of them over the last 13 years they have taken 10 of the championship titles. Five apiece, so will Serena make it 6 this year.

As well as their court outfits, both love their jewellery bling. Serena, has regularly been seen wearing a tennis bracelet. This is a thin in-line bracelet with a symmetrical pattern of diamonds. Originally called an Eternity or In Line Bracelet, we have former Number 1 Tennis Player Chris Evert to thank for its current name. During the 1987 US Open Chris was wearing an Eternity Bracelet - during play the bracelet broke, and play was interrupted for the recovery of it. The incident sparked the new name for the bracelet and a surge in its popularity.

Those of us without the Number 1 tennis player budget, can buy equally stunning cubic zirconia Tennis Bracelets.

Heres to all things Wimbledon - including tennis, strawberry and cream, Pimms, rain, Cliff (sorry, couldn't resist adding cheesy Cliff), silly spectators hats (you would be mad if you had to sit behind them) and Tennis bracelets!

Enjoy the next 2 weeks.

Game, set, match and championship (we hope) to Andy.

The Great Gatsby and 2013 Fashion

The Great Gatsby Jazz Age Glamour

Even before the premiere of the much anticipated Baz Luhrman film The Great Gatsby at Cannes Film Festival, fashion has been loving the glamorous flapper fashion and opulent jewels of the 1920s. From the catwalk right through to the high street fashion was paying homage to the eagerly awaited film. With Miuccia Prada masterminding the iconic costumes, the film was always going to be a visual spectacle.

This stylish interpretation of The Great Gatsby has had even the most hardened fashionistas clamouring for the look. Thanks to the high street it is easy to incororate the look into your everyday style - without the weight of some of the Miuccia Prada designed costumes - poor Carey Mulligan! (well actually no not poor at all, I would loved to have tried on some of those fabulous dresses!)

Oasis dress £40 in Sale

As for the opulent jewels, we can't all afford the gorgeous Tiffany pieces, but again we can all recreate the look. Probably the most iconic pieces of jewellery from this era are the long strands of glass beads or pearl necklaces.

 Jazz Age Pearls

For a little sparkle marcasite jewellery is also perfect for Jazz Age glamour.

Great Gatsby inspired Marcasite bracelet

Oh and don't forget that sparkly head piece - but perhaps save for evening glamour, don't overdo the look!!

So enjoy the glamour of the 1920s with a little 2013 update.

Let me know if you loved the film too.

Price of silver soaring

The price of silver continues to increase, despite slight fluctations in the price, the trend continues to be upwards. The average silver price for the month of August 2011 (as at 26 August) was £788.28 per kg. On 26 August 2010 the price was £395.49 per kg.

The reason for this?

Well there are a number really, all combining to make silver very desirable, and of course resulting in the continuing increase in price. The following points all help illustrate why the price just keeps on going up. Its in laymans terms, and this list is not a definitive one, but I hope makes interesting reading.

1. For years Central Banks have been selling off their reserves of silver, to meet excessive demand. As a result the mining of silver has not expanded, as it was deemed unprofitable. Demand is now exceeding supply.

2. The digital age is increasing the demand for silver. Your plasma TV, some of the components are silver,
like wise your smart phone, DVDs, computers, solar power. Injury yourself  - silver has healing properties and is used in medical dressings.

3.Tying in with point 2, because most of the silver mined is for industrial purposes, it is not hoarded like gold and stock of it is used very quickly. So although it has an investment value like gold, unlike gold the above ground store of silver is decreasing - because of the demand in growth industries.

4. Investment in silver is now available to the average investor - and is an attractive option in todays volatile investment market. (It is also a more affordable investment, in a market where gold is priced at over £30 per gram). Currently, it is seem as a less volatile investment to the traditional stocks and shares market. Your pension fund may well be investing significant amounts of money in the precious metal markets too. All increasing demand on an already limited stock.

5. Most mined silver is a by product of other mined minerals - gold, copper, lead and zinc. Only 30% of  newly mined silver is sourced from devoted silver mining.

6. China has always been a significant player in the mining and export of silver. It is now exporting far less and also importing far more (various tax rebates have been withdrawn which previously made export an attractive option). China is also encouraging its citizens to personally invest in silver and gold. This suggests that China is now both purchasing and storing silver and gold - suggesting China want to make its currency the new reserve for the world.

As mentioned earlier, this subject could cover pages, and be far more indepth, but I hope this is an interesting over view.

On a final light note for silver jewellery lovers, your collection is growing in value - and as i've always thought silver is no longer the poor relative of gold. (And as already discussed silver has so many worthwhile uses - gold is only really used for jewellery and investment, it has no use in industry). So although your jewellery purchases may now be more costly - see it as an investment! Any excuse hey!
